Examples of self doubt

What is self doubt?

  • Lack of self confidence
  • Doubt in one's abilities to perform well at something
  • Feeling like you're not good enough or strong enough
  • Feel like an impostor in a particular job. Feel like you don't belong there

Sweaty palms. Blank mind. Inability to answer the question that you were slaying just yesterday. Jumbling up words in  that job interview. Sounds familiar? Research has indicated that under-performance stems from self-doubt more than anything else. That’s right. Even when you have prepared enough to crack that difficult Math exam, or trained enough to ace that audition, self-doubt may lead the mind to be paralyzed at inappropriate times, leading to failure in responding appropriately to the situation.

Self-doubting can be an effect of various factors. It could be due to a bad past experience; expectations or disapproval from parents, peers, and colleagues; unrealistic expectations from the self; fear of the unknown. However, there are ways to get rid of this self-doubt, and utilize your potential to the fullest! Here are 5 methods with you can implement to rid yourself of self-doubt, and be the person you truly are:

1. Stop asking yourself ‘What if?’

What if

The future is always unknown an uncertain. While imagining this future, we often fail to live in the present, and focus on current issues at hand. Instead, we focus on the prospect of something that we fear happening, and this tendency leads to the inability to think properly in the present. Remember that there is no proof  that what you fear WILL DEFINITELY HAPPEN. By thinking that way, you are putting yourself in a circle of self-doubt and under-performance. SO, ALWAYS focus on the present. DO NOT create unnecessary worries about the future.

2. Trust yourself more

People have expectations from us and opinions about us all the time. However, it is imperative to understand that that people’s opinions of us are not reflective of who we really are. Self-doubt arises many-a-times from the evaluations about us that other people have given. While some criticism can be healthily received, an worked upon, not everything others say of us is always true, and needs to be treated with caution.

4. Set realistic goals

Success

While being ambitious is a great quality, it is important to realistically gauge your capabilities, and set rational goals. Setting unrealistic goals may lead to larger disappointments, thereby increasing self-doubts. Remember that the ultimate goal can be achieved one small and successful step at a time!

5. RELAX AND THINK POSITIVELY!

Positive thinking

The most important thing is to set your thoughts in the right direction. Always think positively about the outcome of your goals. This will automatically set your mood for achievement, and help you attain success. When you feel clouded by unnecessary thoughts, take a deep breath and relax. Clearing your mind will improve your functionality, thereby contributing positively
